Elijah Fauntleroy is facing multiple charges after allegedly leaving a gun unsecured that led to a child shooting herself on Sunday afternoon in Bowie, leaving her hospitalized a day later.

Shortly before 4 p.m. on Nov. 3, officers from the Prince George's County Police Department responded to a residence in the 600 block of Brookedge Court, where they found the child suffering from a gunshot wound.

Investigators say that Fauntleroy brought the gun into the home and left it unattended in the living room. The child then picked up the weapon and unintentionally fired one round, which struck her.

Following the shooting, Fauntleroy grabbed the gun and ran from the residence, according to police.

The child is expected to make a full recovery.

Fauntleroy was charged with reckless endangerment and multiple weapons offenses. He is scheduled to be taken to the Department of Corrections.
